For more than 30 years, research helped propagate a view that drinking in small amounts could promote a healthy heart, but a new assessment of the evidence shows that, it is not exactly the case.
It adds significantly to the research available that shows that, if you want to drink alcohol for enjoyment, so long as you do it sensibly, that’s fine.
Nobody’s arguing that you shouldn’t enjoy your evening whiskey. But what it does tell us is that, if people thought they were drinking for health benefits, they should think again.
The benefit was a wonderful thing to think about when the first research came through, about 30 years ago, 40 years ago; showing that there might be cardiovascular benefits from alcohol.
But the more research there is, the more it is clear that those benefits just do not exist.
The problem is that many people do not realize what drinking in moderation actually meant.
“I think we still have to get across that, there are health harms from alcohol use above certain levels,” said a professor of medicine.
